Stop and start

If kids seem frustrated or upset, ask them if they’d like to play some more or if they feel finished with this part of the session. This may mean taking a temporary break, moving onto the next activity, or stopping the session all together.

Why this technique
Sometimes kids just keep playing because they feel expected to and don’t feel comfortable saying (or aren’t able to say) they’d rather stop. It’s important to respect kids’ rights in these situations, whether or not they verbalize their desire to stop.
