Pick three faces

Use emoji faces (print it out or screen share) to ask three questions:

  • “Choose a face that shows how you felt when playing. Why that face?”
  • “Okay now let’s choose a second one. Why that face?”
  • “Great! How about one more? Why that face?”

Why this technique
Kids may find it challenging to tell you their feelings or be shy about sharing their likes and dislikes. Having them pick faces first helps start the conversation. Oftentimes, the first two faces don’t reveal much (e.g., “This happy face because I liked it.”) but eases kids into the activity. However, the third face chosen might reveal a deeper insight (e.g., “I picked the zippered mouth face because I didn’t know how this activity worked, so I didn’t want to say anything with other people around.”)
