Card sort

This technique helps get kids’ opinions on any visual material. Prepare by creating individual cards for the material you want to discuss (e.g., character designs, early sketches, mood boards with different art styles). Place the cards on a table or the floor. Ask the kid to sort the cards according to a specific category (e.g., moods, for big/little kids, their favorites) and, if they’re able to, to explain their reasoning.

Why this technique
Focusing on this hands-on activity together creates a relaxed, playful atmosphere. The most valuable outcome will likely be your conversation inspired by sorting the cards, rather than the results of the sorting.
