Printout pause

Use visuals of the product experience to jog kids’ memories when asking questions about specific parts of the activity or specific interface designs. For remote sessions, try screen sharing the visuals or have parents print out the visuals and help with transitions.

Why this technique
Kids often will not want to answer questions while they are in the middle of an activity. Even if you pause the activity, they’ll likely want to continue right away. By printing out the parts of the product that you’d like to ask about, you will signal a clearer end or pause to the activity so kids can focus on your questions, instead of on playing.
