Invisibility cloak

Start observation sessions by saying, “I want you to pretend that I’m not here because I want to know how kids play with this without any adults. I’m going to put on my ‘invisibility cloak,’ okay? Sometimes it’s hard to remember that I’m invisible when I’m actually here, so if you forget, don’t worry. I’ll remind you I have my invisibility cloak on!”

If the kids try to talk to you, remind them: “Remember to pretend I’m not here. I’m invisible!”

Why this technique
Telling kids upfront to pretend you’re not there while also acknowledging how it’s difficult to remember will help make them feel okay when they forget, and you need to remind them.
