Kid consent
“Do you like games and playing? Do you want to play a game with me?”
Explain what you’ll be doing with the kids in kid-friendly language, and get their okay before you begin. Let them know they can change their mind about playing at any time too. If the parent agrees, this is also the time to ask the kid if it’s okay for their parent to be outside of the room but close by if they need them.
Why this technique
Consent from minors is called “assent.” Getting assent from children is important to conducting ethical research. Always respect their wishes!
